Faqs
The F word. Uggh. We know it's painful. We would love nothing more than to offer some magic formula so the ladies of the world could fit clothing with some shred of reliability. In the absence of any golden rule, however, we CAN tell you how fit works for our Moxie & Moss Mavens.
First, please see our Size Guide page, which has 3 columns:
- The left column of our size guide is the most common American size grade.
- The middle column is our MMW size guide, which is based on a more universal grading system. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS # IS NOT YOUR WAIST MEASUREMENT (like in men's apparel). It is a number that factors in both waist and hip proportions.
- The third column is a general size guide for additional comparison.
- Kate, our founder, is our fit model. She's 5'7" tall and has a 27” waist and a 38” hip. Her inseam is 30”. She weighs 132 pounds.
- She wears a size 6/28 in the Black and Indigo Flex Mavens and a size 4/27 in the Indigo Power Flex Maven. She sizes down on the Power Flex because of its flexible nature and construction. Because the denim is premium, it does not lose shape/blow out; it gives and molds to the body over time.
- She wears all of her Mavens in a size 32” inseam cuz she likes a good cuff!
- Our sizing system is not based on vanity sizing; it is a fairly democratic, true reflection of a woman’s measurements and proportions.
- We do not put specific measurements on our size chart because, honestly, we have found that they confuse people more and the pants sizing can be different depending on which fabric you choose (see bullet #5 above).
- When you try on your Mavens for the first time, there should be no gapping in the back of the waistband or extra fabric around/below the crotch. They should fit like they just came out of a hot dryer. When sized right, the fabric will conform to your body over time, but not bag out like some fashion stretch jeans do.
- Keep in mind that we currently offer free shipping on orders over $100 to make your decision a bit easier. When possible, we encourage people to order several pairs and send back whatever sizes aren't right (returns and exchanges are free for that reason).
- If you need help, email us at cs@moxieandmoss.com. We love advising on appropriate sizes and fabrics and are here for you!
Where can I try on MMW Maven pants and see other products?
Currently, we do fittings by appointment at our Portland office showroom near the Pearl. Email us so we can get connected: cs@moxieandmoss.com. For those beyond Portland, if all goes to plan we hope to be in national retail locations by Fall 2018. Total global domination by 2020!
How do other MMW products fit?
100% Beanie—a moderate fit accommodating most head sizes, intentionally unisex sizing. (We just have to add that the Peruvian alpaca wool is DREAMY!)
Graphic Tshirts—the shirts have an intentionally feminine cut (no more high, ugly, stiff collars). They run a tad large.
Double-pronged Belts—these come in 2 sizes and are meant to accommodate varied (or changing:) waistlines due to their continuous hole pattern. Also unisex.
What if you discover that your size is out of stock?
We sincerely apologize. It's exciting that things are selling quickly, but we want every woman to get what she wants!!
If your size is out, please consider ordering your pant through our back-order option which you'll see on each of our product pages.Your email address will be added to our back-order list, and you will be notified first when more products become available again.
When will MMW offer extended sizes?
Our current Maven pants run from size 24-34 (US00-18.) Simply grading up this pattern would lead to flaws in the extended range, which would not be acceptable to us or our customers. In order to produce Mavens beyond size 34 (=US18), we need a new extended-size fit model and pattern. This takes resources, money and time, but it is a big goal for the next year, which we are prioritizing and working towards in the first half of 2018. If you wear a larger size, fall in the middle range of extended sizes, and live in the Portland area, let’s talk. Or, if you are an extended-size customer, we want to hear more from you in terms of what you look for in your workwear, patterns, styles, and features. Thanks for your patience while we pursue this.
Why do you only offer a slim fit Maven currently?
Our first Maven pant is an intentionally slim-fitting pant in response to Kate & Kyle’s needs in their landscaping business (not wanting excess fabric, ability to tuck into boots, avoiding wet, muddy cuffs, looking good when talking to clients) backed up by endless commentary that women are sick and *@?! tired of baggy, droopy, ill-fitting work pants based on men’s cuts.
All three of us have three different body types and three different ways of working. So we get it! We are continuously doing research to understand what women are looking for. As a result, we will have new pant styles on our website in Fall 18, including:
- both denim and canvas straight leg utility pants (that fit over boots)
- denim bib overalls
Please keep the comments and input coming—it directly influences our product development choices!

Please see our Exchanges & Returns Policy page.
What is your shipping policy?
Shipping is a flat $8 for all domestic US customers, and free shipping for orders over $100. Returns and exchanges are also free. Shipping times are usually pretty quick—3-5 days.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes! We are happy to ship internationally via USPS. Taxes and duties are the responsibility of the recipient. We currently ship to: Canada, Great Britain, Germany, France, Australia & New Zealand. Rates and times are location specific, depending address and weight. If your country is not listed and you are interested in ordering from us, please contact us at cs@moxieandmoss.com so that we can enable shipping to your location.
How do I wash my Mavens?
When you first get your Mavens, they should fit snugly—like you just took them out of the dryer. Due to the stretch content and quality of the denim, they will give and mold to your body over time. When you wash them, see our care label on the inside of your pant, which states "Machine wash cold with like colors; hang dry or tumble dry low."
Of course if you like a snug fit, you can also dry on high. Just don’t tell Sara (our resident denim head)!
Please note: For environmental reasons, we choose not to set our dyes with chemicals or repeat wash our denim fabrics (they just have one wash during manufacturing to avoid shrinkage issues).
If you are a dry waller or work around drywall, we have had people report that the jeans' indigo blue dye can rub off within the first few months. The more you wash them, the less this a problem, but please be careful in these situations as the indigo may transfer.
